Joint injections FAQs

How will joint injections relieve my pain?

Joints that cause chronic pain often have excess levels of inflammatory chemicals in the area, which is your body’s way of protecting the joint from further injury. Continuous inflammation prevents your body’s tissues from healing, creating a vicious cycle of pain, swelling, and irritation.

The most common type of joint injection contains cortisone, an anti-inflammatory steroid medication. When cortisone is injected into your joint, it reduces inflammation in the area, which in turn reduces swelling and pain. Unfortunately, cortisone also can have many negative side effects and long-term negative effects on healing. Recent studies have even confirmed that repeated cortisone injections can increase the risk of arthritis worsening. Therefore, Dr. Pietropaoli and his team, rarely utilize cortisone injections. Instead, we specialize in using your body’s healing powers and potential utilizing natural, biological ways of reducing inflammation and healing naturally utilizing treatments such as PRP and BMAC.

By decreasing the inflammation and treating any underlying structural or functional issues through rehab and other therapies our team can help you get moving again. With less pain.

Is a joint injection right for me?

In most cases, Dr. Pietropaoli begins your treatment plan with conservative therapies like MLS laser therapy and performance rehabilitation. We may also recommend a joint injection for you to return to the sports and activities you love or even daily life. We will only recommend surgery when conservative measures haven’t given you enough relief.

What types of joint injections do you offer?

Victory in Motion offers a comprehensive suite of joint injection options, including:

  • Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)
  • Bone Marrow Aspirate Cells (BMAC)

The type of injection you need is determined by your diagnosis, imaging, symptoms, and your specific recovery goals.

Do I need a rotator cuff repair?

To diagnose a rotator cuff tear, Dr. Pietropaoli will perform a thorough consultation and physical exam to understand your symptoms and the location of your pain. He will order x-rays, diagnostic ultrasounds, and an MRI of your shoulder to confirm the diagnosis and determine the severity of the tearing.

Based on your diagnosis, Dr. Pietropaoli and our team of medical providers will recommend a customized treatment plan for you that may include physical therapy, joint injections, BMAC, platelet-rich plasma (PRP), arthroscopic surgery, and/or treatment with a bio-inductive patch; usually, a combination, individualized, personalized program/plan, as these treatments work better/synergistically as opposed to ala carte.

What is a bioinductive patch for rotator cuff tears?

A bioinductive collagen patch/implant is a stamp-sized implant that can help biologically repair a damaged tendon during arthroscopic surgery. The patch stimulates new collagen formation, which repairs your damaged tendon tissues and helps them become filled in and heal stronger.
